In a shocking turn of events, two men from Portland, Oregon lost their lives while searching for Bigfoot in Washington. The news was reported by TheOutdoorGearReview on their YouTube channel.
According to the Scania County Sheriff's Office, the pair went missing on December 24th, 2024, and their bodies were found three days later in a heavily wooded area of a nearby National Forest. The cause of death was determined to be exposure and ill-preparedness.
The Sheriff's Department used Flock cameras, a highly advanced surveillance system, to locate the missing subject's vehicle. Over 60 search and rescue personnel, canine units, drones, and air assets, including the United States Coast Guard, were deployed to locate the missing men.
The tragic incident highlights the importance of being prepared when going on any adventure, especially in the wilderness. The two men broke one of the most basic rules of going out for an adventure, they did not tell anyone where they were going, and they did not have a plan in place.
When embarking on any outdoor adventure, it is crucial to inform someone of your exact route and the time you expect to return. Additionally, having a reliable form of communication, appropriate survival gear, emergency shelter, enough water, food, and water purification methods, basic tools such as a paper map, compass, GPS device, and proper emergency signaling equipment are all essential.
It is also important to understand your own personal limitations and to remain calm if something does happen. Use the gear that you brought with you to assist you with your problem, use your communication tools and devices, and triangulate your location using your map, GPS, or phone.
Being prepared properly dramatically increases your chances of survival in an emergency event. The deaths of these two men could have been avoided if they had been adequately prepared.
Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the two men who lost their lives. Let this serve as a reminder to always be prepared and informed when embarking on any outdoor adventure.
