The crisp mountain air of Rocky Mountain National Park filled Ranger Dylan Foster's lungs as he made his way along the winding Trail. Tall pines loomed on either side, their branches swaying gently in the late afternoon breeze. It was a quiet day in this remote section of the park, just the way Dylan liked it.
As he hiked, Dylan's mind wandered to the reports he'd have to file later. It had been an uneventful week, with only a couple of minor incidents involving careless campers. He almost wished for a little excitement to break up the monotony.
The trail curved sharply to the right, and Dylan's boots crunched on a bed of fallen leaves. The sound seemed unusually loud in the Stillness of the forest. He paused, listening intently. Something felt off, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. Shaking off the feeling, Dylan pressed on.
As he rounded another bend, Dylan's eyes were drawn to an unusual sight on the ground. He stopped abruptly, his heart rate quickening. There, pressed into a patch of soft mud, was a footprint unlike any he'd seen before.
The print was massive, easily twice the size of his own boot. It was vaguely human-shaped, but the proportions were all wrong. Five toes spread out from a wide, flat sole, each one ending in what looked like a claw mark. Dylan's mind raced as he tried to make sense of what he was seeing.
Bears were common in the area, but this was no bear print. Mountain lions? No, definitely not. Some kind of hoax, perhaps? He reached out tentatively, running his fingers along the edge of the impression. It was deep, suggesting whatever made it was incredibly heavy.
A chill ran down Dylan's spine as he realized the print was fresh. The edges were still crisp, undisturbed by wind or wildlife. Get a grip, Foster, he chided himself. There's got to be a logical explanation for this.
Dylan began to follow the tracks, his senses on high alert. The trail led him deeper into the forest, away from the main path. The forest canopy blocked out much of the fading sunlight, and Dylan flicked on his flashlight. Its beam cut through the gloom, revealing more of the strange footprints.
As he continued to follow the trail, Dylan's mind whirled with possibilities. Could this be evidence of some unknown species? A bear with a deformity? Or was he walking into an elaborate prank?
Suddenly, Dylan heard a sharp crack split the air. He whirled around, his hand instinctively going to the bear spray on his belt. His eyes darted from tree to tree, searching for the source of the sound.
"Who's there?" he shouted, trying to keep the tremor out of his voice. "This is Ranger Foster. Identify yourself."
Silence was his only answer. Dylan's pulse pounded in his ears as he strained to hear any movement. For a long moment, nothing stirred. Then, so faint he almost missed it, came the sound of heavy footsteps.
They were coming from behind him, from the direction he'd just come. Slow, deliberate steps that spoke of something large. Dylan's mind raced. Should he run? Hide? Stand his ground?
Training and instinct wed within him as the footsteps grew louder. His radio crackled to life, making him jump. He fumbled for the device, his eyes never leaving the tree line.
"Foster here," he responded, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Just checking in, Dylan," came the voice of his fellow ranger. "You're about an hour overdue. Everything okay out there?"
Dylan hesitated, his mind racing. He couldn't tell his fellow ranger what was really going on. He'd never be believed.
"Yeah, sorry I'm fine," he said, trying to keep his voice casual. "Just lost track of time. Heading back now."
As the radio fell silent, Dylan became acutely aware of the forest around him. The usual evening chorus of birds and insects was absent, replaced by an unnatural quiet. He took a tentative step backward, then another.
His foot came down on a dry twig, the snap sounding like a gunshot in the Stillness. That's when he saw it - two eyes reflecting the light back at him. They were set high off the ground, far taller than any animal he knew, and they were watching him.
Dylan's breath caught in his throat as he locked gazes with whatever was hiding in the shadows. His mind struggled to process what he was seeing, to reconcile it with the world as he knew it.
Then, with agonizing slowness, the eyes began to move. They rose higher, as if the creature was standing to its full height. A low rumbling growl reached Dylan's ears, so deep he felt it in his chest.
That's when Dylan turned and ran. He crashed through the underbrush, branches whipping at his face. Roots threatened to trip him with every step. Behind him, he could hear the thing giving chase, its powerful strides eating up the distance between them.
Dylan's lungs burned as he tore through the darkening forest, his mind racing with fear and disbelief. This can't be real, he thought. This can't be happening.
But the crashing sounds of pursuit were all too real, growing closer with each passing second. Whoever - or whatever - was chasing him was faster, stronger, and knew these woods far better than Dylan ever could.
As he ran, Dylan's mind flashed to all the stories he'd dismissed over the years - campers reporting strange noises in the night, hikers swearing they'd seen a massive ape-like figure in the distance. He'd always laughed them off, assured them it was just their imagination playing tricks on them.
Now, with the hot breath of an unknown predator practically on his neck, those stories didn't seem so funny anymore.
