Stephen King said “Nobody likes a clown at midnight” and I think that quote embodies what makes clowns scary at times. It’s more about the context rather than the actual clown costume. A clown making balloon animals at a birthday will make most people smile but a clown walking down a dark alley in the middle of the night would scare most people. While real phobia of clowns (coulrophobia) is rare, it is actually very common for people to be unnerved by clowns and it has been like that for most of clown history.
