Oregon Man Recalls 1980 Sasquatch Encounter at Age 10

There's something about childhood encounters that always hits differently. When a witness sees something unexplained at such a young age, it tends to leave a mark that lasts a lifetime. That's exactly what came through in a recent interview that popped up on the YouTube channel Creek Devil, hosted by two-time witness and longtime field researcher William Jevning.
The guest, a man named Rob, shared a story that goes all the way back to 1980, when he was just about 10 years old. He grew up in a small coastal town on the central Oregon coast, in the rain shadow of the coast range. The area apparently had a history of reported sightings — over 60 of them, though most came from a single individual, so take that with a grain of salt. Still, the region has that kind of vibe that makes you pay attention.
Rob and his buddy, who happened to be his next-door neighbor, were out on a bicycle ride one day after a stretch of heavy rain. They pedaled east out of town and hit a T-intersection about a mile outside of the main area, where an old Jeep trail cut off into the forest. They bounced through a ditch, hit a mud puddle almost immediately, and slammed on the brakes. And that's when they saw it.
About 25 to 30 feet away, walking at an angle across the trail from right to left, was a Sasquatch. Rob described seeing it for roughly five to seven steps, maybe 10 seconds total. The details he remembered were striking. The figure appeared to be walking inside the ruts of the old Jeep road, almost as if it was deliberately hiding its footprints. That kind of behavior lines up with what researchers have noted over the years — these beings seem to display an intelligence that goes beyond what we'd expect from a simple wild animal.
One of the most fascinating parts of his description was the way the lighting played across the creature's hair. Rob said it seemed to shift colors depending on the background — blending in with the darker forest, then the lighter areas. But when it stepped into a beam of sunlight, the hair exploded with color. Browns turned to blondes and reds. He compared it to the color of deer, bark, and the needles on the forest floor. That kind of camouflage ability has been reported by other witnesses over the years, and it's one of those details that makes you wonder how something could blend so perfectly into its environment.
Rob and his friend didn't really talk about what they saw. They tried to tell their parents, but being so young, they weren't taken seriously. It wasn't until 30 years later, at a town reunion, that the two of them finally reconnected about it. They beelined for each other, stepped aside, and had a discreet conversation that basically boiled down to: "Did we really see that?" Rob tried reaching out to his old friend on Facebook but never got a reply. Imagine carrying something like that around for three decades without being able to fully process it with the one other person who was there.
Then there's the second part of Rob's story, which is honestly a little chilling. Not long after the bicycle encounter, he woke up screaming in the middle of the night, claiming there was a Sasquatch in his window. His older brothers tried to calm him down and told him it was their uncle outside wearing a gorilla mask, trying to prank them. But here's the thing — when Rob talked to his brother about it years later, and later still reached out to his uncle, the uncle flat-out denied ever doing anything like that. So was it a nightmare? Or was it something else entirely? Rob still doesn't know, and he still gets occasional nightmares about it to this day, maybe once or twice a year. For a long time after that, he couldn't sleep near a window. He'd crawl into his sister's closet and sleep under her clothes. That's the kind of lasting impact these encounters can have on people, especially children.
Rob also mentioned going back to the area years later for a deer hunt with his brother. They parked and started heading into the woods when they heard something massive coming through the trees — turned out to be a large herd of elk stampeding down Saddle Ridge. If you've ever been in the woods when a herd of elk comes through like that, you know it's absolutely terrifying. They don't stop for anything. Rob and his brother hunkered down under a log and waited it out.
What makes Rob's story stand out is the raw honesty about how much this encounter has affected his life. He described it as having a detrimental effect, saying he's become so obsessed with it that it borders on insanity. He even mentioned he probably should have gotten counseling over it. That's something that doesn't get talked about enough in this community — the psychological toll these sightings can take on people, especially when they're young and don't have anyone to validate what they saw.
Childhood sightings are some of the most compelling out there, precisely because of that unfiltered quality. Kids don't have the same baggage adults do when it comes to explaining away the unknown. They see what they see, and it sticks with them.
If this kind of firsthand account resonates with you, the full interview is worth checking out over on the Creek Devil channel. Jevning has been doing this for over four decades, and he knows how to let a witness tell their story without interrupting too much. It's a good one.
