Bruce's professional background as a patrolman, deputy sheriff, sergeant, detective, and chief of narcotics exposed him to numerous Bigfoot and Dogman encounters, including one chilling incident where a Dogman reportedly followed him home. The conversation took a wild turn when Bruce shared a story from an elderly man who had encountered what locals were calling the "Lizard Man." The man, who had traveled extensively and actually seen sloths in other countries, recognized the creature for what it really was, a giant sloth. According to Bruce, the creature could stand on two legs and had such a massive tail that it could lean back and use it like a chair. This connects to some fascinating historical accounts. Jessica brought up similar stories from early European explorers in what is now South Carolina, who described meeting indigenous people who were said to be lizard-like and would dig holes in the ground to fit their tails so they could sit down like everyone else. The famous Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp comes to mind, a creature that has been reported in that region for decades. The discussion also touched on Thomas Jefferson's 1797 paper on Megalonyx, the giant ground sloth. Jefferson was so convinced these creatures might still be alive that he instructed Lewis and Clark to keep an eye out for living specimens during their famous 1804-1806 expedition. Jefferson was actually one of America's earliest paleontologists, and his paper on Megalonyx helped launch the field of vertebrate paleontology in the United States. For those unfamiliar, Megalonyx was a massive creature. Some species could reach up to 10 feet tall when standing on their hind legs and weigh over 2,500 pounds. They had enormous claws, powerful builds, and were covered in thick fur.
