There's something about a childhood encounter that always grabs my attention, and a recent interview I came across on YouTube delivers one of the most compelling ones I've heard in a while. The guest, Sam Chandler from Bend, Oregon, sat down with Jeremiah Byron over on the Bigfoot Society channel to share experiences that stretch all the way back to 1985, when he was just eight years old. Picture this: it's a summer night in Northern Virginia, the sun is still going down late in August, and there's plenty of light filtering into Sam's bedroom. He's lying in bed, and something catches his attention. When he opens his eyes, there's a young Sasquatch face peeking over the top of his dresser, just looking at him. No noise, just this almost laughing or smiling gesture, and then it was gone. Sam says it completely flipped a switch in him, and for years he wanted nothing to do with anything paranormal. I can't even imagine what that would do to a kid. But the story doesn't end there. Sam's family had a cabin in Ontario, Canada, just south of Algonquin Provincial Park, sitting on what was originally 5,000 acres of logged land that had grown back into thick forest. For those unfamiliar with that region, Algonquin has long been a hotspot for strange encounters, with the dense wilderness and remote lakes providing the kind of secluded habitat that makes it a perfect candidate for Sasquatch activity. The cabin sat on a private lake surrounded by thousands of acres of either privately owned or provincial land, with barely anyone living there year-round. What Sam describes happening at that cabin over the years is the kind of stuff that makes the hair on your arms stand up. Loud, violent bangs against the walls in the middle of the night that he now believes were Sasquatch slapping the cabin. Footsteps that seemed to circle the building. And then there was the spirit activity, which Sam distinguishes from the Sasquatch encounters. His father, a retired Marine, apparently has the ability to see spirits and would get visited by them at night while they slept in the same room. Sam mentions that the energy in certain spots around the property would shift dramatically, almost like crossing an invisible line into territory where you simply weren't welcome. One of the most intriguing moments came from an older retired military guy who was part of their group. He got up early one morning to start coffee at the cook house and reported hearing a man turn around and walk back into the forest. Just casually dropped it into conversation and then tried to change the subject. Sam wasn't having it. The moment that really pushed Sam to start putting the pieces together happened around 2010. He was down by the lake alone on a full moon night while the others were back at the cabin. He heard deliberate footsteps crunching through the leaves on the ridge to the north, the kind that felt intentional, like whatever was out there wanted him to know it was there. Sam also mentions experiencing that same "you're not welcome here" energy in the Appalachian Mountains, suggesting this isn't just a Canada thing but something he's encountered in multiple wilderness settings. That kind of geographic spread in experiences always makes me pay closer attention, because when someone reports the same phenomenon across different regions, it adds a layer of credibility that's hard to dismiss. There's a lot more in this conversation that I haven't covered here, including some of the deeper details about the cabin experiences and Sam's ongoing journey trying to understand what's been happening to him. Jeremiah Byron does a great job letting Sam tell his story in his own way, and you can really feel the weight of decades of experiences coming through. If you're into long-form interviews with people who've had sustained, lifelong encounters rather than just a single sighting, this one is absolutely worth your time.
