Geneticist's 15-Year Bigfoot DNA Study Reveals Unknown Species

Okay, this one stopped me in my tracks. A video surfaced on YouTube featuring a retired molecular geneticist from British Columbia who claims he spent fifteen years quietly running DNA analysis on samples that didn't match any known species in the reference databases. And when the results became too significant to ignore, his career at the University of Northern British Columbia came to an end. The man telling the story is Dr. Wallace Kenny, now 69 years old and living outside Terrace, BC with his wife Joan. He earned his doctorate in molecular genetics from UBC Vancouver back in 1983 and spent the following decade doing unglamorous fieldwork for the provincial Ministry of Environment. Grizzly bear hair snag studies, wolf scat analysis, salmon fry genotyping. The kind of methodical, by-the-book work that earned him a reputation as the most conservative scientist in his department. That reputation is exactly why a retired trapper named Raymond Joseph drove nearly four hours from Smithers to Prince George in October 1996 to hand-deliver a plastic bag containing a clump of dark hair. Joseph had pulled it off a strand of barbed wire near his trapline cabin in the Telqua range. He also brought photographs and measurements of tracks he'd found in fresh snow nearby, sixteen inches long with a stride length of nearly six feet in a walking gait. Kenny ran the sample through standard mitochondrial DNA sequencing targeting the cytochrome B gene, the workhorse marker for species identification. The extraction was clean. No degradation. No contamination. But none of the sequences matched anything in the reference database. Not black bear, not grizzly, not moose, not elk, not mountain goat, not wolf, not cougar, and not human. His first assumption was technical error. So he reran the extraction from a second hair. Same result. He ran blank controls. Clean. He even sent a third hair to a colleague at the University of Alberta with different equipment and different reagent lots. That lab got the same sequence. Multiple locations in some of the most remote country in northern BC, the Telqua range, the Bowley Valley, the Skena watershed, the Omanica Mountains. All pointing to a population of something that isn't in any reference database he had access to. And then there's the ending. According to Kenny, the data eventually attracted attention from people who wanted it for purposes he wasn't comfortable with. Rather than hand it over, he says he made choices that ended his tenure track position, his funding, and very nearly his marriage. He retired in 2012. A cytochrome B sequence that doesn't match a reference database isn't by itself proof of anything exotic. Reference databases are incomplete. There are thousands of mammal species and countless subspecies whose full mitochondrial genomes have never been sequenced. That's a legitimate scientific point and Kenny himself makes it in the video. But here's what sticks with me. This isn't some random person on the internet claiming they found Bigfoot hair. This is a trained molecular geneticist with a doctorate from UBC, a tenure track position at UNBC, and a reputation for being the most rigorous, least sensational scientist in his department. He ran controls. He sent samples to an independent lab. He spent fifteen years collecting data before he says anything publicly. And he says the pattern told him something he could defend.
