I just came across a powerful interview on the Creek Devil YouTube channel that every researcher and witness out there needs to hear. Host William Jevning—himself a two-time witness with over 40 years of field experience—sits down with Donovan Yazzie, a member of the Navajo Nation from the Monument Valley area, to discuss some truly remarkable encounters that blend cultural tradition with firsthand sightings.
Don, as he introduces himself, comes from a region right on the Utah-Arizona border, near the community of Halchita, Utah, and Mexican Hat. The area he's describing is rugged, remote, and absolutely perfect cover for these elusive beings—right along the San Juan River, near the Bears Ears region, with washes draining down from the Black Mesa and Chuska Mountains creating a natural labyrinth of canyons and creek beds. For anyone familiar with the Four Corners, you know this terrain is as wild and untamed as it gets.
What makes this interview stand out is the cultural context Don brings to the table. Growing up on the reservation, he was raised with stories of the Yenaaldlooshi—the Navajo term for skinwalkers. He describes childhood experiences that would terrify anyone: scratching on windows, slapping on trailers, doorknobs jiggling in the middle of the night, running on rooftops, foul smells, and the sound of men and women chanting outside. The family would arm themselves when the men were home, but when it was just the kids, prayer was the only option.
But the encounter that really got my attention happened when Don was about 18 years old, around 2007 or 2008. He and about seven family members—including an uncle who had been living in northern Nevada—decided to go out at midnight to explore the backcountry. The uncle, who had grown up off the reservation, wanted to see something for himself.
About 45 minutes into the hike, they started hearing a sound Don struggles to describe even now. He says it was like a growl, but also a humming and breathing all at once—something he calls "demon type." About 100 yards to their left, on a small hill, they saw yellow-gold eye shine reflecting back at them. The figure was pacing back and forth, still growling.
Don, thinking it might be a bobcat or cougar, approached with his uncle's bright flashlight. As he got closer—within 50 to 70 yards—he realized this was something entirely different. The proportions were wrong. The head was pointy, there was no visible neck, the shoulders were massive, and the figure was wide—every bit of 5 and a half feet wide, he estimates, and 13 to 14 feet tall. The fur was red, matching the red sand of the region.
The eyes, Don notes specifically, were huge and set further apart than a human's. And unlike a skinwalker—which he says he's seen before and knows has human eyes underneath the mask that don't reflect light—these eyes were shining bright.
The figure stared at him, let out another low-pitched growl, and then slowly backed away, disappearing into the darkness.
But the encounter didn't end there. As they made their way back toward Halchita, Don's 14-year-old cousin—who had wandered about 60 yards ahead—came running back terrified, reaching out with both
