The bridge in question spans the Calapooia River, a 1,920-foot concrete and steel structure carrying two lanes of rural highway traffic about 35 feet above the water. Like most bridges of its era, it features concrete abutments at each end that create triangular confined spaces between the bridge deck and the ground below. These spaces are dry, thermally stable, and acoustically isolated from the world above, the traffic noise creating a masking effect that makes them practically invisible in acoustic terms. Wildlife biologists have increasingly recognized these forgotten spaces as valuable shelter and movement corridors for everything from bats and birds to larger mammals. What this inspector found in March 2019 at the southern abutment did not fit any known category. The floor of the confined space, which had been covered in accumulated debris during his previous inspection two years earlier, had been cleared. Not pressure washed, not formally cleaned, but tidied. The organic debris had been pushed to the margins and organized into neat piles at the back corners. Against the rear wall sat a compressed organic material deposit about 8 feet wide and 2 feet deep, layered and arranged in a way that suggested a prepared resting surface rather than random accumulation. Finding them on the underside of a concrete bridge slab in a space no human would casually enter adds another data point to a growing body of evidence. The inspector returned to the bridge three more times in 2019, in May, August, and November. Each visit revealed continued intermittent use. The bedding material had been supplemented in May and partially replaced with fresher material by August. The floor clearing was maintained. And in August, two additional mark clusters appeared at the abutment's north face that had not been present in March. What makes this account particularly compelling is the inspector's professional perspective. He approaches bridges as structural systems, not as wildlife habitat. His observations about the landscape function of the Calapooia River crossing are genuinely insightful. The bridge serves as the lowest elevation crossing point over the river, connecting the forested Cascade foothills on the east side with the agricultural Willamette Valley floor on the west. The Calapooia drainage connects south to the McKenzie River drainage through a series of forested ridgelines, providing movement cover across the valley-facing slope. In other words, this is exactly the kind of terrain and crossing point that Sasquatch researchers have long identified as prime habitat and travel corridor. The combination of physical evidence here is hard to dismiss. Prepared bedding areas, oversized primate handprints, bipedal tracks well outside the human size range, maintained cleanliness of the space, and symbolic notation marks all pointing to the same conclusion. This isn't a single ambiguous piece of evidence. It's a pattern of behavior consistent with what researchers would expect from an intelligent, habitual user of the space.
