She yelled back, got a response, and then the next round of vocalizations were noticeably closer. Something was moving in on them. One of the guys had gone to bed early, his tent closest to the tree line. Not long after, he radioed them saying something was throwing stuff at his tent. Sybella grabbed her thermal camera, one of those old XP units that cost around $8,000 back in the day but had no recording capability, and walked over to the corner of his tent. She wasn't expecting much. But when she fired it up, there was a heat signature right there. She held the camera steady, waited a minute or two, and then slowly, a head and shoulders emerged from behind the tree. It was clearly humanoid. And here's what makes this story stand out, instead of bolting, the figure started playing peekaboo with her. It would watch her, then slowly duck back behind the tree, then peek out from the other side. This went on for several trees along a creek behind the first one. It was almost like it was curious about her too. When she finally told the other guys what she was seeing, they came up behind her to look. That's when the figure seemed to realize it had been spotted. It turned and walked off into the forest, and Sybella got to see the full profile. She describes it as having massive shoulders, almost like a linebacker, with the head tilted forward rather than sitting straight up on the neck. It had a hunchback appearance and moved completely silently into the trees. That kind of thermal encounter is rare, and the peekaboo behavior she describes matches a lot of what researchers have documented over the years.
