Campers in North Carolina's Oari National Forest had a terrifying encounter that'll make your hair stand on end! In a video uploaded by Base Camp Chris, Cody and his wife Sarah shared their harrowing experience from October 25th, 2015.
The couple decided to camp in their favorite spot within the West Morris Mountain Campground, which is isolated and backs up to the thick forest behind their campsite. They brought their two dogs, Max and Dutch, and set up their campsite as usual.
As they were cooking dinner, they heard coyotes yipping in the distance, but nothing out of the ordinary. However, moments later, they heard a wailing sound that seemed to be answering the coyotes. The sound turned into a moaning one, and the coyotes responded. Cody, who has a degree in biology and plenty of experience in the forest, thought it might be a bear.
Cody decided to try out his new hammock and set it up about 2530 ft from the campsite. He went back to the campsite, and Sarah was tending to the fire. They went to bed, and Cody fell asleep in his hammock.
Around 2:30 a.m, Cody heard movement behind his hammock. He thought it might be a deer, but the sound was bigger than a deer's. Cody waited for the sound to move, but it stayed in the same location, making a breaking sound. He was a little freaked out and lay there, trying to figure out what was going on.
Over his left shoulder, Cody heard another noise that sounded like a deer's warning sound. However, whatever made the sound had to be 20 ft tall, according to Cody. The sound was deeper than anything he'd ever heard, deeper than a lion's roar. Cody described the sound as a long sigh.
Cody was still in his hammock when he heard another sound that was crazy. Meanwhile, the tree branch breaking continued for another 15 minutes. Then, Cody heard his wife coughing, and she said she had an upset stomach. Cody mustered up some courage to check on her, but he was still unsure of what was going on in the woods.
Cody decided to go back to his hammock, but he wanted to stay in the tent. However, his sleeping bag was back in the hammock, and he didn't want to go back to get it. He worked his way back out to the forest, decided to stay in the hammock one more time, and found a stick on the ground. He broke it and threw part of it into the forest, breaking it again, and threw another part in a different direction.
Cody repeated this process three more times, but each time he turned off the light, the branch breaking started up again. He was truly terrified and decided to get out of there. He turned the light on, stepped out, and did a quick scan of the forest with the light. He moved quickly back into the camp after grabbing the sleeping bag and unzipped the tent.
Cody said there was something going on in the forest, and Sarah agreed. They spent the rest of the night in the tent, too scared to go back outside. This encounter is a chilling reminder of the mysteries that lurk in our forests and the importance of being aware of our surroundings when camping.
