Have you heard of the Boggy Creek movies? The first one, made in 1972 by Charles B. Pierce, told the story of a monster that terrorized the people of Fouke, Arkansas. It was a surprise hit, and of course, a sequel followed. But did you know that there is another Boggy Creek movie out there, one that has nothing to do with Pierce's original?
The YouTube channel Creature Movie Reviews recently took a look at this forgotten sequel, Return to Boggy Creek (1977). The video starts off by giving some background on the first two Boggy Creek movies, before diving into the plot of Return to Boggy Creek.
The movie follows a family who lives near Boggy Creek and is worried about their children playing in the swamp, as there have been sightings of a monster known as Big Bay Tha. The Perkins family also has a run-in with the creature while having a picnic. Meanwhile, the kids in the family stumble upon Big Bay Tha's lair and even get saved by the monster when they get lost in the swamp during a storm.
The video's host points out that the acting in the movie is actually pretty decent, especially from Don Wells who plays the grandfather, and the child actors. The creature itself is a man in a monkey suit, but the host notes that for the time, it was an acceptable representation.
One interesting thing to note is that the host of the video points out that the movie seems to be marketed towards children, which is a departure from the first two movies. This could be why the movie is often overlooked by Boggy Creek fans.
The video also notes that the movie is hard to come by and was never going to leave an impression like the first one did. However, the host encourages viewers to check out the movie for themselves, as it is available to watch for free on YouTube.
All in all, the video is an interesting look at a lesser-known sequel in the Boggy Creek franchise. It's worth a watch for any Boggy Creek fan, or for anyone interested in obscure horror movies from the 70s.
