In a chilling encounter from the YouTube channel DarkWilderness, Mitch and his family had a terrifying experience with what they believe to be a family of Sasquatches in Western Alberta.
It was spring of 2001, and Mitch and his wife Linda decided to do something different with their garden. Instead of using standard gardening trellises, they built a teepee-like structure out of Tamarac poles for their beans and peas to grow up along. With their three young children in tow, they headed west towards the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in search of the perfect poles.
As Mitch and his wife took turns harvesting the poles, their children played on a blanket beside the truck. Suddenly, they heard a blood-curdling guttural scream from behind them. Mitch's first instinct was to grab his youngest child, while his older children ran into the truck and locked the doors. They initially thought it was someone messing with them, but the sound was too loud and guttural to be human.
As they tried to figure out what they had just heard, they heard another scream from the opposite direction. The screams seemed to be screaming back and forth at each other. Mitch and his wife were still not overly concerned, but that all changed when they heard clumps of mud and grass flying through the air towards them. They were then replaced with four to five-foot logs, which Mitch knew no person could throw with such force.
At this point, Mitch was certain he was not dealing with a person. As they looked towards the direction of the screams, they saw a large female Sasquatch on all fours, crawling towards them with a young one holding on to her stomach and another on her back. Mitch described the way she crawled as reminding him of the way Fred Flintstone walks, with her back feet bent.
The Sasquatch made no noise at all as it made its way out of the bush, and Mitch and his wife stood there, staring at this incredible creature. They had no idea what to make of what they just witnessed, but they knew it was time to get out of there. They quickly rushed into the truck and took off.
Before this experience, they would spend the summer out in the Rocky Mountains of Western Alberta, but because of what they experienced and witnessed that day, they basically avoided the Wilderness altogether that summer. Even to this day, over 20 years later, their extent of camping now involves using a large RV in populated campgrounds, and their main outdoor activity is fishing for salmon.
In another encounter from the same YouTube channel, Vince had a terrifying experience while Backcountry fishing in Codu Lake in Eastern Manitoba. It was 1997, and Vince was 21 years old. He was an Avid fisherman who had grown up fishing and doing Backcountry trips in the White Shell and Noing Provincial Parks.
On this particular weekend, he and his buddy loaded up their flatback canoe on top of Vince's SUV and headed out to the White Shell. They pulled the SUV over, grabbed the canoe off the roof, and set off Northeast across the lake towards the Portage. When they got to the Portage, they brought their first load of gear from Big Wh Shell into Codu, came back, got the canoe, and brought it up to Codu. By the time they had reloaded all their stuff, the sun was already setting, and it was starting to get dark.
As they made their way along the lake in the dark, they heard a massive splash come from the right. They grabbed their flashlights and shone them towards where they had heard the splash, thinking it might be a moose, a deer, or other campers messing with them. But when they looked in that direction, they saw nothing.
Suddenly, they heard a loud crash in the water, followed by a loud splash. They shone their flashlights towards the sound and saw a large creature in the water, swimming towards them. Vince and his buddy were terrified and quickly paddled away as fast as they could.
As they made their way to their campsite, they heard more crashing and splashing in the water behind them. They finally made it to their campsite, and Vince's buddy refused to get out of the canoe. Vince had to unload all the gear by himself and set up the tent.
The next morning, they woke up to find large footprints all around their campsite. Vince knew that they were not human footprints and that they belonged to a Sasquatch. He and his buddy quickly packed up their gear and headed back home, never to return to Codu Lake again.
These encounters serve as a reminder that the Wilderness is full of mysteries and that Sasquatches are out there, living their lives, undisturbed by humans. It's up to us to respect their space and to treat them with the same reverence and awe that we treat all of nature's wonders.
