It's always exciting to come across new information about our beloved Sasquatch, and a recent video from the YouTube channel PBS Eons has certainly piqued my interest! The video discusses a real-life "Bigfoot" that existed thousands of years ago, known as Gigantopithecus. Gigantopithecus, which literally means "gigantic ape," was a genus of ape that lived in China and Southeast Asia between 2 million and 300,000 years ago. This ape was massive, with estimates suggesting it stood nearly 10 feet tall and weighed up to 660 pounds! That's right, a real-life Bigfoot! The video explains that in 1935, an anthropologist discovered some "Dragon Teeth" for sale at a market in China. These teeth were huge and ape-like, leading the anthropologist to name the new genus Gigantopithecus. Since then, thousands of teeth and a few jawbones have been found, but the rest of its body has never been discovered. While ancient DNA has not been retrieved from the fossils, scientists have been able to sequence some of the ancient proteins from the tooth enamel. These proteins suggest that Gigantopithecus' closest living relatives are orangutans, with whom it shared a common ancestor around 10 to 12 million years ago. I find it fascinating to learn about Gigantopithecus and its similarities to Sasquatch. While we may never know for sure if Sasquatch exists, discoveries like Gigantopithecus only add to the intrigue and mystery surrounding these elusive creatures. I highly recommend checking out the PBS Eons video for yourself to learn more about Gigantopithecus and its connection to Bigfoot. Who knows, it may just spark your curiosity and lead you down a path of Sasquatch discovery!
