In a recent video from the YouTube channel "Where's My Yowie," Jamie delves into an intriguing newspaper article from 1928 that tells the story of a "haunted cave" and the legend of a hairy man in the Burnett and Auburn Rivers region of Queensland, Australia. According to the article, written by George McIver, the Aborigines of the area believed the cave to be haunted and would not go near it. This belief was also shared by some of the early white settlers. The cave, located behind a waterfall, featured an elongated hollow carved out by flood waters over ages. The floor of the cave was a deep pool, and during flood times, numerous sticks and other debris were forced into the cave and whirled around, creating a smooth, rounded appearance on the ends of the sticks. The Aborigines believed these sticks to be the work of a hairy man who lived in the cave and was ready to harm them. Jamie from the "Where's My Yowie" channel shares his own experience visiting the cave and not seeing the hairy man, but notes that Chapman, a hereditary king of the hawkwood tribe, told him that the hairy man only worked at night. Chapman also shared the legend that if any or more than the hairy man sticks were removed, they would find their way back to the cave during the first night. Interestingly, Jamie mentions a fictional story called "The Mystery of the Haunted Cave" by George McIver, written in 1910, which also features a yowie origin story about a Yowie called KU brew who made the first boomerang and tomahawk. Jamie notes that King Chapman must have been the aborigine who told the story of KU brew. This video and the newspaper article it's based on offer a fascinating glimpse into the legends and beliefs of the Aborigines and early white settlers in Australia. The idea of a "haunted cave" and the legend of a hairy man are reminiscent of stories of Bigfoot or Sasquatch in North America. Whether or not there is any truth to these legends, they offer a unique and interesting look into the folklore and beliefs of different cultures.
