In a quiet town in Southern New Hampshire, nestled in the shadow of the mighty Monadnock Mountain, lies Marlborough. This small town is home to a peculiar phenomenon that has been reported by many witnesses and recorded by several researchers. The Marlborough Monkey, as it has been dubbed, has been described as a large, bipedal creature covered in dark hair, with an eerily human face and enormous tracks.
The Marlborough Monkey is just one of the many names given to this mysterious creature, which has been reported all over the continent, with a particularly high number of sightings along the west coast of the United States and in historical New England. While some believe it to be a type of ape, others argue that it is a yet-to-be-discovered species of hominid.
John Horrigan, a researcher of unexplained phenomenon, broke the story on the Marlborough Monkey sightings back in the 1990s. He knows the Marlborough reports better than most and has released audio tracks of his conversations with witnesses for the first time just a month ago.
One of the stories relayed to Horrigan by David Smith, a wildlife researcher, took place in an area known as Sandbanks near the Marlborough quarries around 1975. A couple claimed to have seen an orange-colored head pop up behind a rock while they were hiking. They described the creature as playing hide and seek with them and eventually disappearing.
Another story from Marlborough, relayed to Horrigan by Smith, is that of a taxi cab driver who, in January 1998, picked up a fare in a remote area and saw a brown furry torso with green eyes in her headlights. The driver described the creature as a gorilla and claimed that it tried to reach onto the roof rack of the taxi to rip it up.
Carrick Saint Lawrence, a student of anthropology at Keene State College, has investigated Marlborough on several occasions. On one of his trips, he heard wood knocking, a sound that has been reported by many other witnesses around the world. Saint Lawrence believes that the Sasquatch, if it is in fact a species of primate, may use wood knocking as a long-distance communication system, similar to the way chimpanzees and other great apes use it.
The Marlborough Monkey remains a mystery, with countless other reports of wood knocking and tree breaks in the area. While some may be skeptical, the witnesses' accounts and the evidence collected by researchers like Horrigan and Saint Lawrence make a compelling case for the existence of this elusive creature.
