In a recent video from TCC Research, the legend of the Basajaun, a creature straight out of Basque folklore, was explored. According to tradition, the Basajaun are large, human-like beings with extraordinary physical strength and agility. They are said to live in the densest forests and caves of the Pyrenees, keeping watch over the forests and protecting the livestock of farmers. The Basajaun are often described as having hair covering their bodies, with the exception of their faces, chests, and bellies. Their feet are similar to humans, and they are known to use roars or cries to warn shepherds of approaching predators or storms. One theory suggests that the legend of the Basajaun originated from the Basque interaction with Neanderthals around 40,000 years ago. The Neanderthals were more advanced than early Homo sapiens and are credited with erecting the first monoliths and mastering the art of making glue from birch tea resin. This glue was used to bind stone to wood in making certain tools. The Basque language is the oldest in Europe, with origins dating back to the Neolithic period, adding weight to the theory of a Neanderthal connection. Despite the legend of a friendly being, the Basajaun has been depicted as a violent creature in some popular culture, such as in the horror tale "Freaktown Comics" where a group of bird watchers come up against something particularly protective of the forest and willing to kill anyone who gets in its way. Reports of encounters with the Basajaun are rare, but one such encounter was reported by a group of cave explorers in 1993. While making camp in the Catalan Pyrenees, they were startled by a hulking, five-foot-tall, shaggy-haired being which wailed like an enraged cat and fled after seeing them. Another recent photo, said to have been taken by a young girl in 2011 while hiking with her family in Ardikatsa, has been circulating on the internet.
