After consulting with a colleague, Greg Champion, Tom believes that the creature could be a remnant of the original giant sloth that managed to survive and evolved to living in caves. The theory is based on a document from 1696 that was discovered in the cave, which describes a creature that matches the description of a giant sloth. The document also includes an image of a three-toed sloth, which was originally published in 1560 and used to represent a ground sloth. According to reports, the giant sloth went extinct in 1550, but Tom believes that the extinction could have been a result of the Indians killing them off and using their fur. Tom also mentions that there was a mention of some hair being seen in the original cave, and if they can find and collect a hair sample, they may be able to prove that the giant sloth is not extinct or that a subspecies of it is still in existence.
