Bigfoot sightings have been reported in various parts of the world, and Connecticut is no exception. The YouTube channel Odd & Untold recently discussed the Bigfoot phenomenon in Western Connecticut, specifically in Litchfield County, where Bantam Lake is located. While the hosts of the podcast have not personally experienced any Bigfoot activity at Bantam Lake, they have had their fair share of unexplained sightings in the area.
In this article, we will delve into the Bigfoot history of Western Connecticut, focusing on the BFRO reports and the legend of the Winsted Wild Man.
Before we begin, let's take a look at the geography of the area. Bantam Lake is located in Litchfield County, and the peninsula where the hosts usually camp is not easily accessible for any Cryptid to sneak in and out without being seen. However, there have been reports of Bigfoot sightings in the surrounding areas, such as Lake Waramog, Canaan, Torrington, and Winsted.
The Winsted Wild Man is a fascinating legend that has been circulating for over a century. The story began on August 27, 1895, when Town Selectman Riley Smith was out picking blueberries with his Bulldog Ned in the area of Colebrook. Suddenly, Ned started whimpering and crawling with its tail between its legs. Moments later, a large man, stark naked and covered with hair all over his body, ran out of a clump of bushes and scrambled off at lightning speed, leaving both Smith and Ned paralyzed with fear.
A week later, the Herald ran a follow-up story, providing more details about the wild man. Smith described it as a wild hairy man of the woods, six foot in height, with black hair hanging down long on his shoulders and a body thickly covered with black hair. The man was remarkably agile and muscular, with a pluck and nerve that made his word first class.
Over the next few weeks, the wild man continued to run amok, generating fear among the locals. While some people dismissed the sightings as a hoax or a mentally ill person, others believed that the Winsted Wild Man was a real Cryptid, similar to Bigfoot.
The BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) has received several reports of Bigfoot sightings in Western Connecticut. For example, in Lake Waramog, a witness reported seeing a large, hairy, bipedal creature walking along the shoreline in 2003. The creature was estimated to be between 7 and 8 feet tall, with broad shoulders and a pronounced ridge along its spine.
In Torrington, a witness reported seeing a Bigfoot-like creature in 2008. The creature was described as being over 7 feet tall, with long, dark hair covering its body. The witness reported that the creature had a strong, unpleasant odor and that it moved with a fluid, graceful gait.
These are just a few examples of the Bigfoot sightings reported in Western Connecticut. While the existence of Bigfoot is still a topic of debate, the reports and legends surrounding this elusive creature continue to intrigue and fascinate people around the world.
