Have you ever heard of the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon? Not only is it a historic building constructed in 1937, but it was also used as the exterior shot for the movie "The Shining" in 1980. But that's not all, this lodge is also the starting point for many climbers attempting to summit Mount Hood.
In a video posted on the YouTube channel Base Camp Chris, a viewer named Pat shares his chilling encounter while climbing Mount Hood in the early 1970s. Pat, who was just getting into backpacking and climbing, decided to climb the south side of Mount Hood with his friend George. They made their base camp at 7,200 feet and buried their food in the snow to prevent any animals from getting to it.
The next morning, they continued their climb but Pat started feeling unwell due to the altitude. They turned around and headed back to their base camp, where they discovered large humanoid footprints in the snow. These prints were about two inches longer than Pat's size 12 climbing boots and followed their own tracks down the mountain.
As they approached their tent, they saw that the tracks circled their tent and went straight for the boulder where they had buried their food. The tracks indicated that something had dug everything out of the snow, ripped open their bags, and ate their food. Pat and George were left in shock, realizing that something large and potentially a Bigfoot had come to their camp while they were away.
Pat kept this encounter a secret for over 50 years, never telling his brother, sister, or wife about it. He emphasizes the importance of being open-minded about what you may encounter in the wilderness, as you never truly know what is out there.
In addition to Pat's story, it's worth noting that Mount Hood is a potentially active volcano and part of the Cascade Range. The mountain is located in the Mount Hood National Forest, which covers 1.1 million acres, with one-third of that being wilderness. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bears, cougars, and elk.
So, the next time you're planning a camping trip or a climb, remember to stay open-minded and aware of your surroundings. You never know what kind of encounter you may have in the great outdoors.
