In a video posted on the YouTube channel Hidden Human Story, an old newspaper article from the 1920s is shared, detailing a fascinating legend about a tribe of hairy, human-like beings known as the "Sea of Ticks" or "Challum." According to the article, these creatures were said to be seven to eight feet tall and were encountered by trappers near Spirit Lake on Mount Saint Helens.
The legend of the hairy men is told by George Totagi, a member of the Chalam Indian tribe, who explains that they were once part of a larger tribe that lived on the east coast of the Columbia River. The legend is further explored through the stories of the Sampoi people, who are part of the Salish division on the coast.
One particularly intriguing tale is told by Car Necker, the granddaughter of the official Storyteller of the Sampoi tribe. She describes a time when the hairy men roamed the forest and Indian children were cautioned to stay away from them. In one story, a little boy is chased by a hairy man and manages to escape, but not before receiving three long scratches down his back.
Another tale tells of two children who are sent down a trail to meet their grandfather, but are captured by a great hairy woman known as the Chihuah Needham. The children are eventually able to escape and call to their grandfather for help, while the Chihuah Needham perishes after being weighed down by large stones.
The video concludes by noting that all of the stories seem to end with the extinction of the hairy tribe, suggesting a desire to get rid of them. However, the video also notes that the belief in the existence of such ape men is widespread and that there may be an element of truth to these legends.
Whether or not you believe in the existence of Bigfoot or Sasquatch, these stories are certainly intriguing and worth exploring further. Be sure to check out the full video on the Hidden Human Story YouTube channel for more details and insights into this fascinating legend.
