Hiking Ape Canyon: A Journey Through History and Mystery
If you're a fan of the great outdoors, then you'll love the latest video from the YouTube channel Our PNW Adventures. In this video, the adventurers take us on a breathtaking hike through Ape Canyon, located on the southeast side of Mount St. Helens in Washington State. With an elevation gain of 2,200 feet and a distance of 10-11 miles, this hike is not for the faint of heart.
As the adventurers make their way through the lush forest, they share some interesting history about the area. Ape Canyon is famous for being the site of an alleged encounter with Sasquatch in 1924. A group of miners claimed that they were attacked by a gang of wild apemen while they were asleep in their cabin. The men reported that the Sasquatch threw huge stones at their cabin and even reached inside and grabbed an ax. One of the miners, Fred Beck, claimed to have shot and killed one of the creatures as it stood at the edge of the canyon.
The landscape of Ape Canyon has changed significantly since the encounter in 1924 due to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980. However, the adventurers believe that they have found the site of the cabin where the miners were attacked. They point out a gully where they believe the cabin once stood and speculate that the Sasquatch may have thrown the stones from the surrounding hills.
As the hike continues, the adventurers reach the bottom of the canyon and encounter a large boulder. They wonder aloud if this could be one of the stones thrown by the Sasquatch. They also mention that the area is home to mountain goats, which can be seen in the video.
The video is a great reminder of the beauty and mystery of the great outdoors. Whether you believe in Sasquatch or not, the story of the miners' encounter adds an element of intrigue to an already stunning hike. So grab your hiking boots and hit the trail – you never know what you might encounter in Ape Canyon.
