However, in the 1800s, shortly after the Civil War, the area was quite different. A farmer, traveling east from Burns towards Nashville, had a harrowing encounter near Hall Spring. As he traveled along the dirt road, he heard strange noises around him. Unable to determine if the sounds came from a human or an animal, the farmer tried to speed away, but the mysterious creature kept up with him. In a state of panic, the farmer and his servant jumped off the wagon and ran in different directions. The farmer hid under the bushes and listened as something tore his servant to pieces. Unable to help, the farmer remained hidden until daylight, but when he emerged, there was no sign of his servant or any trace of clothing. He reported the incident, and a posse was formed, but they never found any evidence of the servant or the mysterious creature. This captivating story from Neoma Finn and the D.A.
