Recently, a video posted on the YouTube channel Bigfoot Society has been making waves in the Bigfoot community. The video, titled "The Lost Gold Mine of Ape Canyon," features an interview with Mark Mercel and Jared Mitchell, who have some exciting news to share about a recent discovery related to the infamous Ape Canyon incident of 1924.
Mark Mercel, a lifetime land surveyor in Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington, has been researching the Ape Canyon incident for several years. In 2014, he began to suspect that the cabin and other features of the site may have survived the eruption of Mount St. Helens and subsequent eruptions. After several trips to the area, he and his friends discovered the foundation of the cabin and other evidence of the 1924 incident.
The discovery of this evidence sparked interest in the Bigfoot research community, and Mark has been involved in several research projects since then. However, the most recent discovery was not made by Mark, but by the Mitchell clan, and that's why we're talking to him and Jared Mitchell today.
Jared Mitchell is one of the great-grandsons of the youngest of the original 1924 miners, Leroy Perry Smith. Mark reached out to Jared's grandmother to learn more about the family's perspective on the Ape Canyon incident. During a Bigfoot conference last January, Mark was able to interview Jared's grandmother, Betty Mitchell, on stage in front of several hundred people.
In the video, Mark and Jared discuss the recent discovery made by the Mitchell clan. While they don't reveal exactly what was found, they do mention that it's exciting evidence related to the Ape Canyon incident. Mark sounds particularly thrilled about the discovery, saying that he feels like a teenager again with all the energy and excitement surrounding the project.
Jared Mitchell comes across as soft-spoken and humble in the video, downplaying the significance of the discovery. However, Mark is quick to point out that the Mitchell family should be proud of their connection to the Ape Canyon incident and the role they've played in Bigfoot history.
It's unclear exactly what the Mitchell clan discovered, but Mark and Jared's excitement is palpable in the video.
