In a recent video from the YouTube channel The It Couple, hosts Dan and SJ are joined by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait to discuss his found footage horror film, Willow Creek. The movie, which follows a couple as they venture into the woods in search of Bigfoot, is a departure from Goldthwait's usual comedic work.
Goldthwait explains that he initially planned to make a Christopher Guest-style mockumentary about a Bigfoot conference, but after attending the conference and meeting the "squatchers," he changed his mind. The people he met were already so unique and larger-than-life that he didn't feel the need to exaggerate or make fun of them.
The film was shot in the same woods where the famous Patterson-Gimlin footage of Bigfoot was taken, and Goldthwait and the cast and crew hiked in for two hours on a dirt road to get to the location. Despite the remote setting, Goldthwait says the cast, Bryce Johnson and Alexi Gilmore, were able to improvise much of their dialogue and build their characters through their interactions.
Goldthwait also discusses his own beliefs about Bigfoot, saying that he would love to live in a world where the creature exists. He mentions that he has a friend who is a Bigfoot researcher and has had his own sightings.
Throughout the conversation, Dan and SJ ask thoughtful questions and offer their own insights on the film. They touch on themes of emasculation and the male ego, as well as the idea of the "Bigfoot curse" - the idea that those who become obsessed with finding Bigfoot often suffer misfortune or tragedy.
Overall, the video is a fascinating look at the making of Willow Creek and the world of Bigfoot research. If you're a fan of found footage horror or just curious about the mystery of Bigfoot, it's definitely worth a watch.
