Iowa Campers Hear Mysterious Howls, Loud Like Air Horns

The witness and their friend were camping in a forested area in Central Iowa, known for its lithic shelf deposits, on Thursday, with plans to head to Northeast Missouri the next day for more arrowhead hunting. They had spent the day traveling along the Des Moines River, stopping at various points of interest. Upon arriving at the campsite around 8:20-8:30 PM, they noticed that it was already quite dark, with only the remaining twilight and their vehicle headlights to guide them. As they settled into their campsite, the witness described the area as a beautiful, thickly wooded region with rolling hills and deep ravines, typical of the driftless area in Iowa. They found a suitable campsite in the North Central position of the forest and began setting up their tents and getting a fire going. During this time, they heard a pack of coyotes in the distance, which quieted down after about 10 minutes. Shortly after, the witness heard four loud, distinct sounds that he couldn’t identify, coming from something large and far off. Despite not being able to pinpoint the source of the sounds, the witness and their friend didn’t feel immediately threatened and continued setting up camp. As they sat by the fire, the witness began cooking a bratwurst when they heard an incredibly loud, amplified sound, similar to a bullhorn or air horn, coming from approximately 150 yards behind them in the northwest corner of the campsite. The witness described the sound as unbelievably loud, and it was captured in the Sierra sounds recording they shared during the podcast. Throughout the night, the witness reported additional sounds, including what they believed to be a Bigfoot howl. Although they didn’t get a clear visual sighting, the combination of the mysterious sounds and the witness’s extensive knowledge of megafauna made this an unforgettable experience.
