In August 1895, a wild man was causing terror among farmers in Winsted, Connecticut. The creature was seen by passengers on a stagecoach and was described as large in stature, with a head nearly the size of a horse's head and teeth that resemble those of a horse but are pointed. The wild man was also reported to have extra-large hands and to live in a meadow. Farmers in the area were afraid to go outside after dark, and 500 men organized a posse to hunt for the strange character. The mysterious disappearance of calves and lambs was blamed on the wild man.
