On a remote island in the Pacific Ocean, a race of stone giants carved a thousand years ago stands guard in silence. These massive statues, ranging from 30 to 80 tons, were systematically decapitated and mutilated in a ritual murder. No one knows who did it or why. The search for answers begins in the quarry of an extinct volcano, Rano Raraku. Dr. Edmundo Edwards, a Chilean archaeologist, has spent the last 10 years probing the riddle of the statues. The quarry rang with the blows of hammers and the rhythmic chanting of workers 500 years ago, but work was abandoned suddenly, leaving half-finished forms in the side of the volcano. The statues were then lowered from the mouth of the volcano using an elaborate pulley system and transported across 20 miles of rough terrain to the sea. The method used to transport the statues remains a mystery, but it is believed to be one of the earliest uses of rollers known to man.
