A retired firefighter recently sat down for a podcast chat and dropped one of the wildest Bigfoot stories to come out of Florida in a long time. The conversation, which popped up on the Black Timber Archives channel, covers everything from childhood mischief at a Girl Scout camp to a reported abduction that had helicopters circling the woods.
The guest, who spent his career in Panama City, Florida, grew up near Fort Myers before his family moved to the panhandle. His parents owned property that bordered a Girl Scout camp — a couple hundred acres with two big lakes, the kind of place where bass fishing was a regular weekend activity. He and his cousins used to sneak onto the camp property at night to mess with the Girl Scouts, shaking tent stakes and tossing rocks at the outhouse. Classic kid stuff.
But one night, things took a serious turn. The guest was home shooting pool with his dad and younger brother when a deputy sheriff showed up at the door. The officer accused the kids of harassing the Girl Scouts while wearing some kind of furry or ghillie suit. The dad shut that down quick — his son had been home all night. Then the deputy got a call to head back to the camp. One of the girls was missing.
What followed was a full-scale search. Helicopters, planes, horseback riders, tracking dogs — the whole deal. They eventually found the girl on the other side of the property. According to her account, a Bigfoot had reached into her tent, pulled her out, and carried her deep into the woods. She was physically fine but absolutely terrified. The case was never solved.
The guest admits he still doesn't know if it was an actual Bigfoot or someone in a suit, but the story made the local newspaper and shook the whole community. Given the proximity to the Everglades and the vast wooded areas of the Florida panhandle, it's the kind of environment where a Sasquatch could potentially remain hidden for years.
The conversation also touches on the Skunk Ape — Florida's own version of Bigfoot, known for its reported foul odor and swampy habitat. The guest confirms that's exactly what people were calling the creature back in his day.
From there, the discussion shifts to documented sightings in Florida, starting with Dade County. A 2010 report describes a driver spotting a tall bipedal figure crossing the road near Miami in just three strides — something the guest finds hard to swallow, rating it low on the credibility scale. Fair enough, three steps to cross a road is a pretty massive stride.
A more compelling case comes from 1977, classified as a Class A sighting near Homestead. A teenager living on the edge of a wooded area near a canal that fed into the Everglades woke up before sunrise and saw what looked like a shadow of a head outside his window. The window was six to seven feet off the ground. He grunted toward it to test if it was real, and got two quick, forceful grunts back — so powerful they made the screen visibly vibrate. The witness also claimed the creature could easily run down a deer, though the guest raises an eyebrow at that detail, wondering how anyone could know that for sure.
The Everglades connection is worth noting here. That vast, swampy wilderness has been a hot spot for Skunk Ape reports for decades. The combination of dense vegetation, remote areas, and abundant wildlife makes it an ideal hiding spot for a reclusive hominid. Hogs, panthers, and all manner of creatures roam those wetlands, and many witnesses have reported grunts, howls, and screams that don't match any known Florida animal.
If you're into Florida cryptid lore, retired firefighter stories, or just love hearing about encounters that happened right under the noses of law enforcement, this one is worth a watch. The Girl Scout camp story alone is enough to give anyone chills — a child reportedly taken by a Sasquatch and carried off into the woods, with a massive search party barely finding her in time. That kind of detail doesn't come around often.
