There's something deeply compelling about a story where the very name of the place carries a hidden meaning, and this one absolutely delivers on that front. A recent video from Base Camp Chris on YouTube tells the tale of two families who had a chilling experience while camping at a location in Washington state whose name literally translates to a word associated with Sasquatch. The setting alone is worth paying attention to. Skookumchuck Reservoir sits within the Snoqualmie National Forest, a sprawling 1.7 million acres of old growth wilderness, volcanic peaks, and rugged terrain. The forest was set aside back in 1897 and includes Mount Baker towering at 10,787 feet. This part of Washington has long been considered prime territory for Sasquatch activity, with numerous sightings reported over the years. And here's where it gets really interesting. The word "Skookum" comes from Chinook Jargon, a trade language once widespread across the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and the Yukon. While it has many meanings, including strong, powerful, and brave, one of its derivatives actually translates to monster. A skookum is described as a variety of mountain giant or creature similar to Sasquatch. So these families were literally camping at a place whose name carries that kind of weight. Getting into this reservoir isn't easy. It's owned by a private corporation with extremely limited access, multiple gates, cameras, and security guards. The families had a friend who worked for the corporation and managed to get them in for a weekend, believing they'd have the place entirely to themselves. Sandy, an experienced outdoorswoman raised on hunting and fishing trips with her dad, brought a boat along because the reservoir is loaded with rainbow trout. The afternoon started out peaceful enough. Sandy took the boat out solo while everyone else relaxed at camp. She trolled across the reservoir and headed to the south side, where steep forest came right down to the water's edge. She started casting in a shaded area with a deep drop-off, maybe 20 to 25 feet from shore. After about 10 or 15 minutes without a bite, something changed. She got that unmistakable feeling of being watched. Then the wind started doing something strange. Every time a gust picked up and rustled the leaves, she swore she heard movement in the forest. When the breeze reached its peak, she heard distinct branches snapping and breaking. Whatever was out there seemed to be using the wind as cover to move through the woods without being detected. Sandy got out of there fast. Back at camp, everyone was having a great evening. Kids were playing, the fire was going, dinner was being made. But Sandy's mind kept drifting back to something her father had told her years earlier. Her dad had been a truck driver for a logging company in Washington, and one evening on his last run of the day, he watched a Sasquatch cross the road in front of him. The creature stopped in the ditch on the other side and looked back at him. He told the family about it a few days later and was met with teasing that turned into a running family joke. Sandy loved her father and believed in him, but she wasn't sure what to make of the story. Now, sitting at that campfire, she was starting to wonder. Everyone turned in around 11 PM. The night was calm and clear. Sandy couldn't sleep. Around quarter to twelve, she heard footsteps walking through camp and assumed it was James heading to the porta potty about 60 or 70 feet away. Then she realized the footsteps weren't heading toward the porta potty. She never heard a tent unzip, and at that distance on a still night, she definitely would have. For the next 15 minutes, she listened to something walking around the camp with what she described as very meticulous steps. The video goes deeper into what happened that night, and honestly, this is one of those accounts that sticks with you. The combination of Sandy's daytime experience on the water, her father's previous sighting, and the unsettling nighttime activity makes for a story that feels layered and genuine. Base Camp Chris does a great job laying out the details and letting the witnesses speak for themselves. If this kind of story interests you, definitely check out the full video. Chris goes into much more detail about the encounter and the surrounding context. It's worth the watch.
