On top of all that, they noticed fresh breaks on trees, what looked like a possible print pressed into some bark, a flat impression in the ground, and they even caught sight of some movement up on a hilltop that they couldn't quite identify. At one point they spotted a big black shape in the distance and made sure it wasn't a bear. They also mentioned a strong smell that one of them compared to laundry soap—which is interesting because unusual scents, especially floral or soapy smells in the middle of the woods, have come up in witness reports for decades. The peanut butter jars they had screwed to the trees were untouched, which they figured might mean whatever's in the area isn't interested in the food offerings, or maybe it's just being cautious.
