Bigfoot sightings have been reported all over the country, and South Carolina is no exception. The YouTube channel Campfire Creepers has compiled a list of the top five Bigfoot sightings in the Palmetto State, and I was excited to check it out.
South Carolina is known for its diverse landscapes, from coastal marshlands to the rugged foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. With a population of approximately 5.3 million and much of the state remaining rural, there are plenty of remote wilderness areas where mysterious creatures might roam. In fact, approximately 67% of South Carolina is covered in forests, making it one of the more heavily forested states in the US.
The first widely documented Bigfoot sighting in South Carolina occurred in 1846 near the Santi River, where a group of farmers reported seeing a massive upright figure covered in dark fur watching them from the tree line. Since then, there have been numerous reports of strange creatures in the state, particularly in the dense swamps and forests of the Low Country and Piedmont regions.
Here are the top five Bigfoot sightings in South Carolina, listed in reverse order:
5. The Lynches River Lurker: In November 2020, two kayakers reported seeing a massive dark figure standing partially submerged in the water in Lynches River County Park near Florence. They described the creature as at least 7 ft tall with broad shoulders and thick shaggy hair.
4. The Conger Shadow: In June 2019, three campers at Conger National Park near Hopkins reported hearing strange guttural growls from the dense underbrush near their campsite. When they shined their flashlights toward the sound, they saw a pair of glowing eyes and a tall shadowy figure watching them from behind a tree.
3. The Caesar's Head Encounter: In March 2021, a lone hiker on a secluded trail at Caesar's Head State Park near Greenville reported spotting a large bipedal creature moving swiftly through the woods. The figure was covered in dark matted hair and moved with an unnatural grace.
2. The Watery River Watcher: In September 2022, four hikers exploring a remote section of Poinsett State Park near Sumter encountered something they couldn't explain. As they paused near a clearing, they heard loud heavy footsteps crunching through the brush followed by a deep resonant growl. When they turned to look, they saw a hulking figure standing among the trees partially concealed by the undergrowth.
1. The Scape or Swamp Encounter: In May 2023, a group of six campers at the infamous Scape or Swamp near Bishopville reported a Bigfoot encounter. As they set up camp along the swamp's edge, they noticed an eerie silence falling over the area. Strange whooping sounds echoed through the trees followed by the sound of snapping branches. When they shined their lights toward the noise, they saw a massive hair-covered figure standing just beyond the fire light's reach.
These sightings are just a few of the many reported Bigfoot encounters in South Carolina. If you're a Bigfoot believer like me, be sure to check out the Campfire Creepers video for more details on these sightings and others. Who knows, you might just be inspired to do some Bigfoot hunting of your own in the Palmetto State.
