The Pacific Northwest is known for many things, including its connection to the legend of Bigfoot. This region has been the site of numerous sightings and encounters with the mysterious creature, and the area around Mount St. Helens is no exception. A video posted on the YouTube channel Crime Captured tells the story of one such encounter and the disturbing disappearance of a man named Joe Carter. In 1924, a group of miners reported a violent encounter with several apemen or Bigfoot in what is now known as Ape Canyon, located on the southeast shoulder of Mount St. Helens. The men claimed that the creatures threw large stones at their cabin and even tore a hole in the roof. One of the animals was reportedly shot and fell off a cliff. This event has since been incorporated into Bigfoot folklore. But what does this have to do with the disappearance of Joe Carter? At least one searcher felt that there was something odd about Carter's disappearance and believed that "Mountain Devils" were involved. Carter, an experienced skier and mountaineer, was with a 20-member climbing party from Seattle in May 1949 when he left the group near a landmark called Dog's Head at around 8,000 feet. He told the rest of the climbers that he would ski around to the left and take a picture of the group as they skied down to the timber line. But something seemed to be chasing Carter as he skied down the mountain, and he disappeared without a trace. The search for Carter was unsuccessful, and his disappearance remains a mystery to this day. Some believe that he may have fallen into a crevasse or been caught in an avalanche, while others think that he may have been taken by the apemen or Bigfoot that are said to inhabit the area. If you're a Bigfoot believer, this video is definitely worth a watch. It's a fascinating look at the legend of Bigfoot and the mysterious disappearance of Joe Carter. Who knows – maybe there is something to the stories of apemen or Mountain Devils in Ape Canyon.
