Lake monsters have been a source of fascination for people all over the world for centuries. From the famous Loch Ness monster in Scotland to the lesser-known Champ of Lake Champlain in the United States, these elusive creatures have captured the imagination of both children and adults alike. Recently, I came across a video on YouTube that showcases the top five lake monster videos of all time. I was excited to see what these videos had to offer.
Coming in at number five is a video of Lake Champlain's famous monster, Champ. Shot in 2009, this video shows a dark creature swimming from the left of the screen, appearing like a giant duck with a smallish head on a thick neck and a large hump behind it. The creature seems to move its head side to side and sinks slowly into the water just before the video ends. Some believe this to be a remarkably close capture of the plesiosaur-like creature known as Champ.
At number four is a video of a large creature in a secluded bay, filmed in 2016. The creature appears to have a large head and is leisurely moving around in the water. It makes a splashing sound as its almost crocodile-like head appears to snap at something. As the person filming moves closer, the creature appears to stretch out and reveal a large body behind its large head. It then ducks under the water as it turns back towards the open lake, perhaps finishing its hunt in the shallows. Could this be another capture of Champ?
Number three isn't strictly a lake monster, but it's too good to leave out. Filmed by a boat captain off the coast of North Carolina in 2023, this extraordinary video shows a sleek-looking creature meandering through the water with a serpentine motion. Critics say it is simply a North Atlantic right whale that has been separated from its mother, but as it undulates through the water, two bulbous protrusions that look like eyes can be seen, as well as a tapered tail rather than the tail flukes belonging to a whale. The video ends with the creature moving further towards the docks.
Coming in at number two is another Champ video, the infamous Bodette film. The Bodette film caused a stir when it surfaced in 2005, showing a strange disturbance in the water and then a large olive-brown colored creature below the surface. The controversy surrounding the video is due to the apparent editing by ABC, who removed the part where the creature surfaces and comes directly at the boat, causing the men to fear that it might ram them. All we are left with is a view of an animal with a long neck and serpentine head below the men's vessel. It appears to have a flipper and even a shell-like structure, leading some to believe Champ is in fact a species of giant long-necked turtle.
Finally, the number one spot goes to a remarkable video that hails from Lake Van in Turkey, filmed in June 1997. The creature captured on camera was estimated to be about 15 meters in length, nearly 50 feet, and was reported to have humps along its back. It is reddish in color, and its blinking eye can be seen, as well as what appears to be bubbles blowing from its snout as it moves slowly through the salty water. Critics say it is a fabricated hoax or possibly a swimming elephant, but the creature appears to be lifelike and animate. Even the governor of Van has claimed to have seen the creature.
These top five lake monster videos are a fascinating glimpse into the world of cryptozoology and the search for these elusive creatures. Whether you believe in the existence of lake monsters or not, there's no denying the excitement and intrigue that these videos inspire.
