Florida is known for its sunny beaches, bustling cities, and of course, the Everglades. But there's another side to the Sunshine State that's often overlooked - its vast swamps and marshes, home to a creature known as the skunk ape. This elusive creature, also known as Estee cupake by the Seminole tribe, is said to be 4 to 9 feet tall, with long hair, a flat face, and a foul stench.
Recently, I came across a video on YouTube that delves into the world of the skunk ape. The video, posted by the YouTube channel Base Camp Chris, features a firsthand account of a skunk ape encounter from 1979.
In the video, Kevin, a high school senior, recounts his experience of going on a photography trip with his friends in West Central Florida. As they were setting up their cameras to take night exposures of the stars, Kevin noticed a foul odor coming from a specific spot in the forest. When he asked his friends if they smelled it, they jokingly suggested it might be a skunk ape. But before they could investigate further, they heard an eerie silence and Rick and Ron both ran back towards the house. Kevin, left alone, soon followed suit.
The next day, the group returned to the spot and found a bed or nest, about 30 feet into the thick forest. They also discovered a 16 to 18 inch footprint, about 1 inch deep. Kevin, who still had some black and white film in his camera, took a few shots of the footprint and the nest.
The video is a fascinating glimpse into the world of the skunk ape and the experiences of those who have encountered it. It's a reminder that there's still so much we don't know about the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.
