The Pacific Northwest is known for its rich history and mysterious creatures, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Pierce County, Washington is no exception. This military base, named after Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition, is located in an area rich in history and shrouded in mystery, with Mount Rainier looming in the background and its own legends of strange lights and mysterious creatures. Recently, I came across a series of videos on YouTube from the channel Remote Cabin Radio, which explores eerie reports of strange figures and hidden creatures at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The final episode in the series, titled "Next Year - We Begin", shares chilling accounts from soldiers who have spotted strange towering figures during training exercises and unsettling tales of hidden creatures lurking in the dense forests. One soldier's sighting occurred in 1966 while he was stationed at Fort Lewis and out on survival training in the Nisqually River Basin with four other men. As they approached the river to catch some fish, they noticed a creature kneeling by the water. When it stood up on two legs and looked straight at them, they were struck by the way it moved - it walked upright for about 8 yards, just like a man. The creature stood 8 to 9 ft tall, covered in reddish brown hair except for its hands and face, with a head shaped like a man's but seemingly no neck. Its mouth was large with prominent lips, though it didn't bear any teeth, and a broad flat nose. The entire encounter lasted around 20 minutes, with no sign of aggression - it seemed more curious about them than anything else. Another account comes from a soldier who served in the Ninth Infantry Division, Third Battalion 47th Infantry Combat Support Recon Platoon, stationed at North Fort Lewis in 1978. While wandering away from his army buddies to be alone and have a smoke, he suddenly felt he was being watched. Just a few feet away, leaning against a tree, was a Bigfoot. The soldier wasn't afraid - he just stared back, noting that the Bigfoot seemed tall and slender, reminding him of a young one. The creature had the reddest eyes he'd ever seen, possibly bloodshot. The soldier stayed there quietly, smoking and eating his stew, not wanting to cause any disturbance. He never told anyone in the military about the encounter, thinking they wouldn't believe him - but he held onto the memory and gave permission to use his real name, Timothy Rivas. A third account comes from a soldier who was stationed at Fort Lewis in 1989 and was on a field exercise with the 864th Engineer Battalion. Around 4:00 a.m., he and a fellow soldier were sitting in a foxhole when the fellow soldier suddenly whispered, "what the hell is that?". There, about 25 yards away, was a figure that looked almost human but stood at least 7 to 8 ft tall with a slight hunch around the shoulders. It moved slowly, making low grunting noises. The soldiers could hardly believe what they were seeing - and when they told their squad leader about it later, he laughed it off and told the first sergeant. They got a reputation as the two Bigfoot Hunters, but they dropped the subject, knowing it wasn't exactly what you want in the Army. These accounts raise questions about the fine line between legend and reality, leaving us to ponder what truly resides in the shadows of this storied landscape. While I can't say for certain if these sightings are of Bigfoot or another mysterious creature, I find them intriguing and worth sharing with fellow Bigfoot believers. I encourage you to watch the full series of videos on Remote Cabin Radio's YouTube channel and draw your own conclusions.
