In a recent video from Nashville Public Radio's YouTube channel, host Kala Aalona interviews Dr. Daisy Fury, a biological anthropologist and cryptozoologist, about the study of cryptids in Middle Tennessee. Dr. Fury, who has a Masters in biological anthropology with a focus on primate studies and a PhD in anthrozoology, is also the host of the podcast "Cryptozoology with Dr. Daisy."
During the interview, Dr. Fury explains that cryptozoology is the study of mysterious creatures that people claim to have seen, but whose existence remains unproven. These can include legendary animals like Mothman and the Jersey Devil, as well as animals whose sightings have not been substantiated by science, such as the Aringondek or Sasquatch. Cryptozoology also encompasses animals that mainstream science believes to have gone extinct, but continue to be reportedly seen, such as the Phosy or certain species of birds.
Dr. Fury goes on to discuss her research practices, including the challenges of parsing out sightings from real creatures versus those influenced by folklore, movies, and TV. She also shares some of her personal experiences with cryptids, including her encounter with a large turtle in Vietnam that was considered a sacred deity by the local people.
The video also touches on the chupacabra, a cryptid that bridges the gap between folklore and biology. Dr. Fury explains that there are two forms of the chupacabra, one in Puerto Rico and one in the Southwest United States, and that while the Puerto Rican version is likely not a real biological entity, the Southwest version seems to be based in biology and is responsible for livestock deaths.
As a Bigfoot believer and a curator for Squatchable, I found this video to be informative and fascinating. It's always exciting to hear from experts in the field of cryptozoology and to learn about their research and personal experiences. I encourage all of our readers to check out the video and to listen to Dr. Fury's podcast for more insights into the world of cryptids.
