In a video posted on YouTube by The Search For Sasquatch, a fascinating account of a possible Sasquatch encounter from surveyor and trader David Thompson is explored. Thompson, known for his extensive travels throughout Western North America between 1785 and 1812, recorded a curious find in his journal on January 7, 1811.
While journeying up the Athabasca River, Thompson and his companions came across a large animal track with four large toes, each measuring 4 inches in length and a short claw. The ball of the foot sank 3 inches lower than the toes, and the hinder part of the foot did not mark well. The length of the track was 14 inches by 8 inches in breadth, and it was walking from north to south. Thompson initially believed it to be the track of a large old grizzly bear, but the shortness of the nails, the ball of the foot, and its great size led him to question this assumption.
Thompson's curiosity is evident in his detailed description of the track, including the weight distribution of the animal as it walked. The fact that his men, mate Te, and Indigenous guides refused to follow the tracks further highlights the significance of this event.
I find this account particularly intriguing due to Thompson's keen observations and the respect shown for the animal that made the track. While the video only describes one kind of track, the possibility of a Sasquatch encounter cannot be ruled out.
