Wood Boogers Encounter in Appalachians: Witness Account & Sketch

A fascinating account of a childhood encounter with the elusive and mysterious Wood Boogers has recently been brought to my attention. The report, which was sent to the British Bigfoot Research group and then passed on to me, describes a series of strange occurrences that took place in the 1960s in a rural area of the United States. The witness, who was five years old at the time, describes playing with friends near a river that bordered a large, heavily wooded bank. The group began to notice small stones landing near them, which they initially blamed on each other. However, they soon realized that the stones were being thrown from a distance, and one particularly large stone nearly hit one of the children. The group also reported hearing the sound of a heavy runner approaching them from a distance, which they felt through the ground and air. The sound was coming towards them quickly, but then moved past and away from them, heading towards the river. One of the most intriguing aspects of the report is the witness's description of a massive shape that they encountered while playing near the river. The shape had long, thin wispy hair, and the witness had to peer around it to see hands hanging at the side and slightly lower than their line of sight. The hands were very large and very human. The witness also described seeing naked toes just visible in the poor light, poking out from thick hair on the ground. As the witness looked up, they saw a small face looking down at them with an expression of amusement. The face had a round iris and pupil, but the witness did not notice a nose or ears. The mouth was described as an "awful gash" and "pug-faced." The witness goes on to describe how the head moved very smoothly without any movement of the body, similar to the head movements of an owl. The witness watched the face through the gloom for a few seconds, and then it was gone with darting speed. The Wood Boogers, also known as Skunk Apes or Swamp Devils, are a type of Bigfoot or hairy humanoid that are said to inhabit the mid-Appalachian Mountains in the east of the USA. The name Wood Booger was given to the creature because it was often rumored to carry off young children, similar to the Boogeyman. The witness's description of the massive shape they encountered is consistent with other accounts of Wood Boogers, which are often described as being smaller than their Pacific Northwest counterparts and sometimes more aggressive. The British Bigfoot Research group has collected numerous reports of Wood Booger sightings, and the area around Saltville, Virginia, is said to be a particular hotspot for these creatures. The Animal Planet TV show Finding Bigfoot has also featured the Wood Boogers in an episode.
